Griffin Takes in Aggieland

Kolby Griffin (St. Pius X High School) is an early target for the Aggies in 2011. The 6 foot defensive back took in the sights and sounds of Aggieland this weekend. Websider's Taylor Hamm caught up with Griffin and spoke to him about his visit to College Station. Read the update in the tailgate!

Kolby Griffin of St. Pius X High School in Houston visited Texas A&M this weekend for the Aggie home opener against New Mexico and took in the sights and sounds of Aggieland.

"I loved the atmosphere at A&M. 78,000 fans cheering and swaying together, all for a non-conference opponent. I can only imagine what that place (Kyle Field) is like during a Big 12 game."

The 6 foot, 180 pound corner back was clocked last week with a 4.42 forty, 30 inch vertical, and a max bench of 275 pounds. Griffin recorded 10 tackles in his opener at corner back, and 2 during special teams.

Kolby is looking for a school with good academics, atmosphere, and tradition.

"I want to major in communications and broadcast journalism. The school I go to must have a good learning atmosphere and I need to be able to fit in socially", said Griffin. When asked if A&M is a place he could see himself fitting in, Kolby said, "Yes, A&M is a place I could possibly see myself one day. The fans and coaches were one of the nicest groups of people I have ever met."

So far Kolby has only received an offer from Baylor, but has a handful of schools he is interested in which include: Texas, UCLA, TCU, LSU, North Western, Duke, and Stanford.

"Im not worried about playing time because I will be 17 years old when I am a freshman. I want to go to a program that I know is going to be a winner or on the rise like A&M. I know Coach Sherman is going to turn their program around and I will be following them closely this year."

Kolby has an interesting relationship with Texas A&M's safety coach Van Malone.

"Actually, Coach Malone was the first college coach I have met. I was walking the halls in my high school one day and Coach Malone looked lost, so I helped him find the coach's office and he asked me if I played football. I told him I played corner back and after he met with my coaches he told me he would keep an eye out for me. I like Coach Malone a lot."

Kolby intends to take visits to Baylor and Texas in the future but he wants to make it back to Kyle Field this year.

"The coaches told me I have unlimited opportunities to come to games and I really want to make it back for a conference game."
