Does Nelson Have a Leader?
"I was supposed to go to camps at Texas and OU a couple of weeks ago," Nelson said. "But things got crazy around here and I couldn't make it. I'm hoping to reschedule and make it over there this summer."
The 6-foot-1, 210-pound playmaker from Dallas Skyline has a busy camp schedule with trips to several Big 12 schools on his plate, in addition to his desire to get back down to Austin and Norman.
"I'm definitely going to Texas A&M in July, and I'm probably going to the Baylor camp," Nelson said. "I'm also thinking about going up to Oklahoma State and then to OU at some point. I'm talking to the Texas staff about rescheduling my visit over there."
The Scout.com four-star linebacker finished up spring practices on a high note and he feels he's made some improvements in the offseason as he and his Skyline teammates prepare for the 2009 season and hopefully a trip to the state championship.
"I can tell I've gotten better. I really worked on improving my coverage skills," Nelson said. "I worked hard to be quicker on my reads and playing in open space. The team looked good. I think this is the best team I've been on."
Nelson has been hesitant in the past to name any leaders, so when the question was asked at the end of the interview if any teams stood out at this point, his response came as somewhat of a surprise.
"I haven't narrowed my list or ruled any schools out or anything like that," Nelson said. "But if I had to say right now which teams were at the top of my list, I'd have to say I'm leaning to OU and Texas A&M."
Nelson expanded on his thoughts about the Sooners and the Aggies.
"I like the whole vibe at OU. They work hard and develop their players and it's a family atmosphere," Nelson said. "At A&M, I like the coaching staff. They are tough when it comes to making you work to get better on a daily basis. But outside of football they are laid back and it seems they are honest and tell you the truth. I also like that A&M is rebuilding and I could be a part of bringing back the Wrecking Crew. "
Nelson originally stated that he wanted to extend the recruiting process into January and announce his decision at one of the postseason high school all-star games, but he indicated that his timetable may have changed.
"I'm looking to push my decision up a little bit," Nelson said. "I'd like to end the process in November before the playoffs so I can put all of my efforts into the team and reaching state."
The Dallas native mentioned that academics, the school's atmosphere, his relationship with the coaching staff will play a major role in choosing his final college destination.
