Aggies add another offensive lineman
On Saturday, Clear Lake offensive lineman Stephen Barrera (No. 28 on AW Top 100) made it a trifecta on the offensive line by pledging to the Aggies while on-campus. He joined four-star running back Christine Michael (No. 14 on AW Top 100), who also committed to Coach Mike Sherman while attending junior day.
"I saw what I needed to see, and clarified some things with the coaches," Barrera said. "I was already leaning to A&M, but after talking to the coaches again I felt it was time to commit."
The Clear Lake native did not commit during his interview with Coach Sherman and the staff at the Bright Complex following the festivities at the football facilities. His decision came later during a few moments of quiet prior to attending the Aggie basketball game, which surprised his position coach, Jim Turner.
"After my interview, I had some time to myself before the basketball game and just thought it all through and felt it was the right time to commit," Barrera said. "So when I saw Coach Turner, I pulled him aside and told him I wanted to commit. He seemed surprised since I didn't commit earlier, but he was pretty excited about it."
While Barrera stars for the Clear Lake Falcons on the defensive line, his future at the collegiate level will be on the offensive line. Sherman, a former offensive line coach himself, saw the qualities needed to be on the offensive side of the ball.
"Coach Sherman liked the way I used my hands and said I was explosive off the ball," Barrera said. "He said I was a very good defensive lineman, but I had the skills and ability to be a great offensive lineman at the next level."
Barrera grew up in a maroon family, with both parents graduating from Texas A&M and an older sister who just recently finished up her studies in College Station. Thus, the news that he pledged to the Aggies was well-received in the Barrera household.
"Yeah, my parents love it. They are very excited about me going to A&M," Barrera said. ‘I guess you could say it's a family tradition around here."
