QB of the future headed to Aggieland

After playing in the Max Emfinger All-Star game, A&M quarterback commit Tommy Dorman is focused on starting classes at A&M in one week. Aggie Websider's David Sandhop visits with the Aggies' quarterback of the future about his All-Star game experience and making the move to A&M.

While Texas A&M head coach Mike Sherman is still working to finish out his new staff and complete his first recruiting class, the Aggies’ quarterback and wide receiver of the future will be making their way to the College Station campus this week to begin their college careers.

Birdville (TX) signal caller Tommy Dorman and receiver are expected to check into their dorm rooms on Tuesday as mid-term enrollees in this 2008 signing class.

“I’ll be down there on Tuesday. It’s starting to hit me that I’m in college,” Dorman said. “I’m excited to get started. It’s a new chapter for me.”

Classes start January 14, and while Dorman has plenty of time to decide on a major, he’s leaning toward studying business. He also has been assigned a roommate, and it’s somebody that he’s known since July, and somebody he’ll sure to know on the football field as well over the next four years.

“I’m rooming with Jeff Fuller,” Dorman said. “I talked to him about it last weekend. It’s a great situation. I’ve known him since the Gamenight Camp last July, and I think it will help us build chemistry on the field too.”

While the Texas A&M veterans will be transitioning into offseason workouts immediately, the new staff realizes that these mid-term enrollees like Dorman and Fuller are making a big life change and want to give the young players a chance to settle into college life and college academics before worrying about offseason workouts.

“I know workouts for the team start right when they get back on the 14th,” Dorman said. “But Coach Sherman wants Jeff and me to focus on school and get comfortable in our new setting before worrying about workouts. He’s down to earth and has done a good job of making us feel comfortable about this transition. We’ll probably start working out after a week of classes.”

The Birdville native is looking forward to getting started in the spring. In his conversations with Coach Sherman, the quarterback will be asked to throw the ball more in his system than the previous staff and that’s just fine with Dorman.

“We’ve talked a little bit about the west coast offense,” Dorman said. “He wants to use both quick timing routes and also dropping the quarterback in the pocket and reading the field. He said be prepared to throw, because he likes to pass the ball.”

Dorman just returned from Jackson, Mississippi and the Max Emfinger all-star game, his last game as a high school player. However, the game didn’t quite turn out the way he had hoped.

“The rosters were uneven and our team was overmatched,” Dorman said. “I was sacked something like nine times and I only played the first half. It was good to get out there for the guys who didn’t have scholarship trying to show they can play college ball, but overall it wasn’t a very organized event and I’ll leave it at that.”

Dorman enjoyed the time he got to spend with future Texas A&M teammate KJ Williams who also participated in the all-star game.

“KJ and I spent a lot of time together last week,” Dorman said. “We were talking about Aggieland 24/7. He sounds pretty excited to get down there. We got to know each other at the Gamenight Camp, so it was great to hang out with him for a few days before I head to school.”

Dorman is a Scout.com four-star prospect and will have a chance to learn Sherman’s new system for a year with Stephen McGee coming back for his senior season. Dorman will be expected to compete with current A&M quarterbacks Jerrod Johnson and Ryan Tannehill for playing time in the 2009 season.
