Countdown 2007: Websider Impact Players - #12

Aggie Websider takes a look at 25 players who can make the biggest impact for the Aggies this year. These rankings are not based on talent, but rather, what contributions can be made by individuals to put Texas A&M back among the nation's elite programs. No. 12? Junior safety Devin Gregg.

Texas A&M junior safety Devin Gregg showed in 2006 that he has the ability to be a playmaker on defense, especially in last year's game against Army, where he recorded a career-high 11 tackles and hauled in 2 interceptions. That kind of big-play ability is why Devin Gregg is No. 12 on the 2007 Aggie Websider Impact Players list.

What he's done so far

Gregg played as a true freshman in 2005, but didn't get onto the field until the Aggies' sixth game of the season against Oklahoma State, but he announced his presence with authority on the first play of his college football career. Gregg found his way into the backfield, sacking the quarterback and forcing a fumble. He's been making big plays ever since.

In just six games (three starts) in 2005, Gregg racked up 31 tackles (17 solo, 2 TFL), including a season-high eight tackles against Oklahoma. Last year, Gregg continued to show off his big-play capabilities.

In addition to his 11 tackles and 2 interception performance against Army, Gregg also made a critical stop on third down against Kansas that allowed A&M to get the ball back for the game-winning touchdown drive.

Gregg started all 12 games for the Aggies in 2006, and finished the season with 64 tackles (23 solo), 2 interceptions and two fumble recoveries.

Why he's important

Last season, A&M became known for its "bend, don't break" mentality on defense, but Gregg showed that he's capable of "breaking" a few big plays of his own, and as a 2006 and 2007 Leadership Council member, his attitude could spread.

Gregg stepped up in many key defensive situations last year and with a schedule that promises many challenges on the road, he will be called upon once again in 2007. If he can continue to make the big play, the Aggie defense could have a big year.
