Harris still getting calls
While the Aggies have experienced some attrition in recent weeks, the bulk of the class remains intact. One big piece of this class is Gilmer athlete Lamar Harris, and he remains in the A&M fold. Harris says he's hearing from other schools, mainly Oklahoma State, but says he doesn't have plans to go see other programs at this time.
"I'm still committed to Texas A&M and I still feel good about it," Harris said. "In fact, I just called Coach Debesse (Thursday) and we talked about everything."
The Aggies snagged four blue chippers from East Texas in February. In addition to Harris, A&M received commitments from Jordan Fields and Keon Furtch of Paris HS and Kendall Wright of Pittsburg, all from the eastern third of the state.
"I'm real good with those guys, but I don't talk to them a lot because we're so busy all the time," Harris said. "Jordan text messages me some. I've known Kendall since seventh grade and we're tight, but I haven't talked to him since track season."
Harris and his Gilmer teammates are finishing up spring drills, and the Buckeyes are gearing up for a successful 2007 season.
"We've got so much talent," Harris said. "But we are so young. I've seen the team mature this spring. We may be young, but we're real good."
On an individual level, the 6-foot-2, 180-pound athlete says he's having a good spring and improving all aspects of his game.
"I'm having a real good spring," Harris said. "It's not that you work on just one thing to get better. You work on everything. The name of the game is getting faster and stronger, and I'm doing that. You have to stay one step ahead of the competition."
In terms of his summer plans, Harris will be going to the Prepstars Combine on July 14, but that's about it as far as football is concerned.
"Other than the Prepstars Combine, that's about it. I don't have plans to attend any team camps," Harris said. "I'm going to New York to visit my grandmother and spend some time with her."
Harris and his Buckeye teammates will open the 2007 season against interstate opponent Richmond High School from Louisiana.
