Weekend Wish List

The Aggies must take care of business this weekend against Baylor, but here's how other Big 12 teams can help the Aggies in their quest for a national seed.

Welcome to Websider.com’s Weekend Primer! We’re taking a quick look at other series around the Big 12, and their significance to A&M. We’ll briefly discuss the merits of each match-up, and conclude with the series result that has the most positive result for A&M. Sorry guys, no rooting against another team just because. You’ve gotta have a reason!

Texas at Oklahoma State – Everyone brace yourselves; you’re rooting for Texas this weekend. First place is up for grabs in Stillwater, and OSU is coming off a hugely emotional series win in College Station. It’s same old, same old for the Longhorns, who have lived atop the Big 12 over the past six seasons. Texas isn’t a threat to A&M’s postseason hosting opportunities; there’s nothing that will change their status. Conventional wisdom says OSU’s RPI keeps them out of competition with A&M, but with a 14-12 conference record very possible for the Ags, the chances diminish with each OSU victory. A sweep won’t happen this weekend, so root for the Longhorns to take two.

Kansas at Oklahoma – An interesting series, and a tough one from an Aggie perspective. OU has a Top 20 RPI, and is just 1 game back of A&M in the conference standings. Meanwhile, the Jayhawks are on the brink of elimination from Big 12 tournament consideration. While A&M’s goals are far bigger, they haven’t been to the conference tourney since 2004. That should fix itself though, and a Kansas series win against Oklahoma would further muddy the bottom half of the Big 12 race. OU is likely to take this series, but root for Kansas to take a pair.

Texas Tech at Missouri – Missouri sits a game in front of the Aggies at 9-6 in conference play, and A&M owns the tiebreaker. Tech is two games back at 7-10, and outside the bubble for an NCAA regional bid at this time. Missouri is the better team here, especially in Columbia. Either result holds goodness for the Aggies; a Mizzou series win helps bury the Red Raiders, while a Tech win knocks Missouri down a notch. Pull for Tech, expect Mizzou.

Kansas State at Nebraska – Is there an NCAA bid on the line this weekend in Lincoln? Both teams carry respectable RPIs (23 for KSU, 30 for Nebraska) but poor conference records (6-9 and 8-10, respectively). A series loss could bury either team, though KSU has a much tougher road to finish than the Huskers. There’s no loser for A&M this weekend; a Nebraska series win knocks KSU’s confidence down even further before they meet the Aggies in two weeks. A Wildcat win throws the conference standings into even more chaos. Root for chaos, root for KSU.

Quick Pick Recap

Texas 2-1 over OSU
Kansas 2-1 over Oklahoma
Tech 2-1 over Missouri
KSU 2-1 over Nebraska
