Texas A&M officials have announced the proposed construction of an indoor practice facility for football, and head coach Dennis Franchione and wife Kim will contribute $1 million to the 12th Man Foundation to go towards the building’s construction.
In his weekly article on his official website, CoachFran.com, Franchione wrote: “Obviously, a lot of thought went into our decision to do this. We decided it would be a gift that helps express our gratitude for everything that
Texas A&M
University and you Aggie supporters have done to make us feel so welcomed and comfortable since we first arrived 2 1/2 years ago.”
The new facility, one of several additions included in the athletic department’s master facilities plan, will be built north of the Aggies’ outdoor practice field on Wellborn Road. Franchione said the indoor practice facility will meet all of the players’ needs (practicing, strength training, dining, medical and academic necessities) in one central campus location.
In addition to the convenience factor, Franchione believes the new facility will boost Texas A&M’s recruiting efforts. The building also offers the football team an opportunity to practice inside when conditions outside--extreme heat, lightning, and excessive mud--make it dangerous to do so.
The size and expense of the indoor facility has not yet been determined, but Franchione hopes his donation will make a difference: “We hope our gift can serve as one of the catalysts that helps move the project forward.”
