A look at where Washington sits on the recruiting trail three months from Signing Day...
Aggie Websider Tidbits
The regular season starts on Friday against Buffalo. For those that say this is a snoozer, Buffalo is now coached by Duke great Bobby Hurley. So there is a storyline here....I guess. In terms of the myriad of bad teams on this early schedule, this team is probably the best of the bad teams.
There is no specific return date for J-Mykal Reese as his suspension length is dependent on his behavior. It appears the team is prepared to play without him for a couple of weeks. Kourtney Roberson recently returned to practice, but if he plays Friday, it will be in a very limited role if at all. Look for his minutes to gradually increase over the next two weeks. Here's my projected starting lineup:
There's some significant recruiting news to report. If you recall in tidbits last week, I mentioned an international guard from France via Senegal who turned heads in the Adidas Championships last August. A&M was working on the travel details to bring him in on an official visit. I've been given the go-ahead to provide a name because he will be coming on a visit this weekend....Sidy Ndir.
He's 6-foot-3 and played point guard for Team Africa at the Adidas Nations event. He's more of a scoring point guard who likes to shoot but he can distribute. He's another lefty like Alex Robinson which is why the staff was at first hesitant about recruiting this kid. But...he's just too good to worry about that. As I mentioned in Tidbits last week, you can search several scouting reports from the Adidas event and scouts were impressed and one analyst said if he were in America he'd be a Top 30 national prospect. Here's a video from 2012's Adidas Nations. He looks skinny there, but in looking at 2013 footage he has filled out nicely.
Here's some video from 2012 at a Nike Tony Parker skills challenge in France...
He came over to the states this fall to play at an academy in Florida. He's Class of 2014 and A&M had connections and got on this kid early. From what I've been told, if all goes well this weekend, there's a decent chance he'll commit. He's a bit raw and the staff will need to control his game a little as he likes to shoot, but he has above average driving ability and perimeter game. Earlier in the fall the staff was thinking they would take either Justise Winslow or this kid, but the thinking now is they want guard help...specifically ball handling help at the point. So they may pull the trigger with Ndir before knowing what happens to Winslow....and there's still no definitive word on him yet just that A&M is still in the hunt.
You'll have fun with this next kid that will take an unofficial visit this weekend. He's a Class of 2016 and he just turned 14 a couple of months ago. His name is Udoka Azubuike. So you're asking...why is A&M bringing in a 14 year old kid for a visit? Well, at 6-foot-10 he already has the nickname "The Nigerian Nightmare." Really? A 13-14 year-old kid already has an intimidating nickname and is visiting a college? Well, watch this brief video and you'll quickly understand...
Ouch. He could play collegiate ball this season (half joking)....Give this staff credit. They've had to get very creative in recruiting talent to Texas A&M and they work their tails off on the recruiting trail.
It will be a very small group of official visitors, but a very talented and important group. I told you about California OL Chris Brown in my "Just Spoke to" update yesterday. A&M has a realistic chance here, but they must make Chris and his parents feel very comfortable on their first trip to Texas. While he's a west coast kid and looking at four schools close to home, he told me it's a dream come true to play in the SEC, the best football conference in the country. So there's a chance despite being close to USC and UCLA. The coaching change at USC is helping the other schools.
I just told you Wednesday night that Jenks (OK) safety Steven Parker confirmed his visit to A&M this weekend and even added a few very interesting off-the-record nuggets that indicates he's VERY serious about Texas A&M. Once again, the SEC factor plays favorably compared to in-state schools OU and OSU in the Big 12. Keep an eye on this one. Parker is A&M's best chance at another elite DB, as Jamal Adams and Tony Brown are longer shots for now.
In a bit of a surprise, East Texas receiver and Top 10 prospect K.D. Cannon has scheduled an official visit despite being committed to Baylor. He's recently been to OU and Tech, but to be honest I haven't stayed up on his recruitment so I'll need to ask around to see how open he is to a switch.
In other news, I've heard that the staff wants two more receivers and Speedy Noil is at the top of the list. As Closer told us after speaking to some contacts at Edna Karr HS, Noil is very much interested in A&M but he wants to see how the offense performs against LSU in Death Valley. An effective 45-point effort and win will help out A&M's chances a lot. The staff is also recruiting Westside big receiver Frank Iheanacho very hard and they believe they have an inside track to land him even though elite schools like Oregon and lSU have offered and caught his eye. Finally, I'm hearing that Davion Hall is still very much an option, and the staff feels they have a good chance to flip him from Baylor if and when the push...but Noil is the top priority for now.
