Tannehill Reunites with Sherman In Miami

The Miami Dolphins reunited Mike Sherman with his QB pupil when they selected Texas A&M QB Ryan Tannehill with the No. 8 pick in the draft. While analysts feel the rookie will sit and watch for at least two seasons, Aggie Websider's David Sandhop thinks otherwise.
As expected, the
drafted Texas Aggie quarterback
with the No. 8 pick in the first round of the NFL Draft.
The selection reunites the Big Spring (TX) native with his offensive mentor and college head coach Mike Sherman who is now the offensive coordinator for the Dolphins.
Miami has struggled to fill the quarterback spot since Hall of Famer Dan Marino retired in 1999. Many draft analysts feel Tannehill's inexperience at the QB position will result in an extended development period over the next 1-2 seasons.
It's true that Tannehill spent the first 2.5 seasons of game action as a wide receiver, and a very good receiver to boot. In fact, had he remained at WR, he would been drafted this weekend at that position as well. However, throughout his five-year career at
(redshirted freshman year), he solely practiced in the offseason at QB, all under Mike Sherman.
The assumption that he "switched" from receiver to quarterback in the last 15 months of his collegiate career is inaccurate. He always worked out with the quarterbacks and sat in with the QB's in offseason and even in-season meetings.
Tannehill is not a receiver playing quarterback. He was always a quarterback catching passes for a depleted Texas A&M receiving corps.
Make no mistake about it from somebody who watched Ryan Tannehill on the Texas A&M practice fields for five seasons. He is a quarterback with as much experience as any signal caller selected in this draft. Miami and offensive coordinator Mike Sherman knew this, and thus he is a Dolphin with a bright future who just might surprise a few draft analysts when he steps foot on the playing field at some point in 2012.
The Miami organization didn't take a quarterback at No. 8 to keep him on the sidelines for three seasons. Sorry Mel Kiper...
