Billy Gillispie – Texas Tech Head Coach
Opening Statement
“Tough, disappointing loss, had some moments where we played
really well, didn’t play good enough for 40 minutes,” Gillispie said. “They
definitely started hitting some shots and playing better, and then when it got
right down to it we weren’t tough enough in the lane to beat them.”
Reason behind offense slowing down
“It was my fault, we probably got to conservative in the
second half,” Gillispie said. “At the end of the first half, you know we just
didn’t make any shots. After we got out to a lead we started wanting to play
conservative, that wasn’t my doing. But the second half I probably made them
try to play too conservative.”
On giving up the Three’s Against A&M
“Well they’re good shooters and that’s a big part of their
offense right now,” Gillispie said. “We had them 24-9 and we let them make two
straight three-point shots and neither one of them were very well defended. We
haven’t been up that much on anyone in a long time, and we just didn’t handle
the lead very well defensively.”
How much does this one hurt
“It’s disappointing because we had a lead,” Gillispie said.
“It’s against a good team that probably hasn’t gotten the results that they
definitely wanted to have. They’re big and athletic and that ultimately was the
deal for us, we couldn’t play in the paint with them. We needed to have a
little margin for error.”

Being outrebounded by so much
“They were just more aggressive than us, we weren’t boxing
our man out, balls were going over our head,” Jaye
Crockett said. “And sometime on free throw rebounds we weren’t pinching. We just
weren’t aggressive going towards the rebounds.”
Did fatigue play a role
“I didn’t even realize we only played five or six people, I
didn’t realize that until the end of the game,” Crockett said. “I mean because
we condition so hard in practice, and we go hard so that makes the games
easier. It was just aggressiveness, we weren’t aggressive.”
Why
did the offense slow down so much in the second half
“Shots just weren’t falling, so that happens sometimes,”
Crockett said. “You got to use your defense and get it inside and stop worrying
about threes and work a little inside – out. So that was our problem.”
Coaches message to the team after the game
“He was disappointed, this was an easy win,” Crockett said.
“We should’ve had this game, we just let them kill us on the boards. That was
just uncalled for if you ask me.”

“Two teams fighting for a win, but our guys fought through
some adversity in the first half, and did a great job defensively in the second
half,” Billy Kennedy said. “We did a better job taking care of the ball,
fortunate to get a win.”
Bouncing back from the slow start
“We turned the ball over, I thought they got some easy
baskets and we were playing back on our heels and the crowd got into it and we
played passive, I thought for the first 10 minutes,” Billy Kennedy said. “We
woke up and started playing like we’re capable of towards the end of the half.”
Talking about Tech’s play
“They wore down, they’re limited, they’re building a
program,” Kennedy said. “Think four guys played 20 minutes the first half.
We’re both in similar situations, and I thought their team fought hard and gave
everything they could. We were just better in the second half and that’s why we
won.”
