Despite losing three straight Big 12 Conference games, the Texas Aggie basketball team is playing…
Critical Turning Point in the Season
With that said, this team and this program must show some fight and some life if there's any chance for this staff to pull Aggie basketball out of this hole. First, the existing players that will return need some positive games that reinforces their belief that this staff will turn things around next season. They must be energized so they work hard and improve in the offseason. Second, and most importantly, the program needs to show some life in these last three weeks for 2012 spring recruiting as well as 2013 fall recruiting.
For the first time this season, I was really puzzled with Coach Kennedy regarding his comments at his weekly press conference following the blow-out and poor defensive effort in Ames.
"First of all, I'm proud of what our guys are doing right now, the effort we're getting, the attitude we have. We just don't have enough to compete at the highest level in the Big 12 right now."
Look, I'm one that believes Kennedy's absence in November was a killer. Losing Jamal Branch, Dash Harris, and Khris Middleton has been a major roadblock. However, the team's talent isn't THAT bad to the point where the Aggies will be battling to stave off Texas Tech for worst team in the Big 12.
The last thing A&M players need is to hear their coach say they can't compete because they aren't good enough. How do you expect the players to compete at a high level after hearing that?
Anyway, I was on-board with this staff after competing and playing good team defense for most of February and looking like they were playing better and turning the corner. Then there was the setback in Ames which I thought was the worst defensive effort since the last ISU game at Reed Arena. Now, in the midst of a four-game losing streak and Missouri and Kansas looming on the schedule, A&M must play a good game tonight. They must hold on to the rope, or we could be looking at 4-14/5-13 conference record...and even with a great recruiter like Coach Cyprien, I don't know how you can recruit impact players to a 9th or 10th place Big 12 team that faded in the final three weeks of the season.
So while there are no championships or tourney bids on the line tonight at 6:00 PM (ESPN2), this is an important game for the future of this program.
